VIENNA is the capital city of Austria. It is by far the largest city in Austria with its population of more than 1.7 million (2.4 million within the metropolitan area). It is the 7th-largest city by population in the European Union. Vienna´s own recorded history began with the Romans, who founded it in the 1st century as Vindobona. Vienna hosted the Habsburg court for several centuries (1440 - 1918). In 1804 Vienna became the capital of the Austrian Empire and continued to play a major role in European politics.
Traditional Vienna is only one of the many facades of this city; the historical centre, a UNESCO world heritage site, but Vienna is also a dynamic modern city. Music is one of Vienna´s legacies. Notable musicians were born here: Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert, Alban Berg, Fritz Kreisler, Joe Zawinul, Falco and many others. Famous musicians who came here to work were Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Antonio Salieri, Gustav Mahler and many others. Vienna is also home to a number of opera houses and museums. Vienna is famous for a lot of coffee houses with a long history that dates back centuries.
Vienna is also well known for Wiener Schnitzel, a cutlet of veal or pork. 1905 - the year the legendary pork schnitzel was born. It was back then that Johann Figlmuller opened a small wine tavern on Wollzeile, right behind St. Stephen´s Cathedral. The brothers Hans Jr. and Thomas Figlmuller are still maintaining the tradition which is now in its fourth Figlmuller generation.
