Berlin is the capital city of Germany. Berlin has more than 4.5 million inhabitants. The city covers an area of 344 square milles. The earliest evidence of settlements in this area are a wooden rod dated from 1192. The first written records of settlements in the area of present day Berlin date from the late 12th century.
Berlin was damaged in the final years of WW II and divided during the Cold War. East Berlin - capital of the German Democratic Republic and West Berlin, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961-1989). Following German reunification in 1990, was Berlin once more designated as the capital of all Germany, instead Bonn. Berlin has reconstructed itself greatly, especially with the reunification push after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The TV tower at Alexanderplatz (former East Berlin) is visible throughout most of the central ditricts of Berlin. No wonder, it´s among the tallest structures in Europe (1.208ft/368m). The Museum Island in the river Spree houses five museums is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has an oceanic climate.
Berlin is among the 25th most visited places in the world. The city attracts more than 5 million tourists a year.
